We arrived today at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. The park is about a mile from Colorado State Road 115 and sits across the street from the main entrance to Fort Carson. Once you climb the mountain to the park and the campground areas you are just down the mountain from NORAD and USNORTHCOM. If you are a movie buff, Cheyenne Mountain and NORAD should be familiar from “Wargames” with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheddy. The park is absolutely beautiful and very clean. While driving in we did notice a prairie dog town on either side of the entrance. We love to see the wildlife.
We pulled into the Visitor’s Center to find out where we were supposed to go. We met Michael Ivis, the Senior Ranger. He is the number 2 ranger at the park but the hosts and general operations are his responsibilities. He put us into Site 19, a pull through full hook up as a temporary site as the hosts we are replacing have not left yet. Michael told us to just chill today and not worry about anything. Tomorrow we should be moving to our more permanent site and when we can go “shopping” for our uniforms.
